Andaman - About the Island

This scenic Island is an Indian Archipelago situated in the Bay of Bengal. It is comprised of roughly 300 islands in all and have rich culture along with a colonial past. Its white sand beaches, mangroves, rainforests and palm lined lands are what describes the Island best. Its glittering turquoise waters also hides within it beautiful Coral Reefs which supports marine life. Its such beauty inside out has also made it a popular water adventure site providing a variety of water activities. Of the archipelago's 572 islands, only 36 are inhabited and a small selection is open to travelers. The south of the Islands are still unknown and is away from tourist activities as the original indigenous peoples are said to live there. So, some of the Islands are strictly off limits for tourists.

It's History

The history of this Island dates back to 800 BC and has been a puzzle which has still not been completely solved. Archealogical evidences have suggested inhabitation during the 800 BC and the Island has been occupied mostly by the tribes called the Andamanese. The Island used to be part of the Chola Dynasty which used it as an strategic naval base against their rivals in Indonesia. Later, it was occupied by the Danish who abandoned it due to many disease outbreak. Finally the British set up their colony here after buying it from the Danish. After the Britihs left, it finally became a part of India and was declared as a Union territory in the year 1958.

An daman is one of the oldest inahabited areas of the country whose Islands are still off limits due to a threat to their indigenous population and the conservation of their culture. The Andamanese, Jarawas and Sentalenese are considered to be the natives of these Islands. They still inhabit the areas in the South Andaman and the Middle Andaman islands. They are generally dark skinned and they live detached from the world, following customs that has been passed to them from ages. They have been inhabiting the islands for the last several thousand years. Most of them have now been wiped out by diseases, epidemics and tsunamis and there are approx. Only 400-450 indigenous people are remaining on the islands. They resort to hunting-gathering lifestyle.
